A self-identified member of a national antisemitic hate group disrupted a Chapel Hill High School Zoom call on Wednesday, leading the school’s administration to investigate and offer resources to those impacted.
Prinicipal Patrick Greene emailed Chapel Hill High families on Thursday evening and detailed the incident. The Zoom meeting was meant for families of the senior class — but an unauthorized individual joined the call and proceeded to interrupt the event by sharing “antisemitic and hateful content” while mentioning their organization. Greene said the person was removed from the call in roughly 90 seconds, but the experience was still “shocking and upsetting” for many.
CHCCS Chief Communications Office Andy Jenks said the person called themselves Jon Minadeo II, the leader of the Goyim Defense League. Minadeo is the founder of the group, according to the Anti-Defamation League, which identifies the Goyim Defense League as a white supremacy hate group. The “loose network” of major influencers and their thousands of followers is known for “in antisemitic stunts and schemes to troll and harass Jewish communities and individuals,” reads the ADL webpage.
“There is no place for antisemitism, hate or harassment in any school community,” Greene wrote to Chapel Hill High families. “We unequivocally condemn this behavior and stand with our Jewish students, families, staff and community members who were targeted or affected by what occurred. I also want to acknowledge that this occurred between the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, times of celebration and atonement in the Jewish faith.”
As a result of the incident, the principal said Chapel Hill High School leaders are reviewing the event and will look to improve security of virtual meetings sponsored or supported by the school. Greene added that the “appropriate authorities will also seek accountability for those responsible for this abhorrent behavior.”
“To the Chapel Hill High School community,” he concluded, “we appreciate everyone who remained calm and helped us respond appropriately in the moment. Schools must be places where every person feels safe and welcome. Hateful actions will not define our community. Instead, I know that we will only strengthen our values of respect, inclusion and care for one another as we stand against all forms of hate and discrimination.”
The alert to families on Thursday night included Greene’s suggestion to contact him directly at his school email, [email protected], if families or students have any pertinent updates to the investigation of Wednesday’s Zoom call disruption.
