He explained the song was inspired by his marriage to his second wife, Sandy Bluesky Wabegijig, whom he divorced three years after the release of Eat a Peach. While speaking to the publication, Betts noted that Wabegijig’s last name “means ‘clear blue sky.'”
“[S]o I was writing it for her and I was writing it as, ‘She’s my blue sky, she’s my sunny day.’ And I thought, nah, this would be a better song if I just sang it to the sky instead of to a woman,” said Betts, who wed Wabegijig in 1972, during the interview with USA Today.
He then said he believed that the change helped make “Blue Sky” a successful song.
“That was a very good move that could make or break that song. It made it more universal,” said the guitarist.
In addition, Betts noted that he was the vocalist on “Blue Sky,” despite Gregg Allman, who died in 2017 when he was 69, being the band’s primary singer.
“I sang some with (my previous band) Second Coming but I never saw myself as a singer and still don’t. I sing because it’s necessary (laughs). I asked Gregg to sing ‘Blue Sky’ and actually the producer, Tom Dowd, he said, ‘No, why don’t you sing it,'” recalled Betts during the 2020 interview.
