All Creatures Great and Small delivers update on fan favourite character following exit – but its disappointing news

All Creatures Great and Small has said goodbye to several characters over its first six seasons on 5, but some have left a more lasting impression than others.

Falling into that camp is Richard Carmody, who arrived in season 4 as an undergraduate vet student and departed towards the end of season 5, after securing a spot on a prestigious research programme in London.

But his decision to leave his Skeldale House family wasn't taken lightly.

Having spent much of his youth at boarding school, he was somewhat estranged from his biological family. So when arrived in Darrowby on his placement, he found the clan he'd never really had.

"It's been novel to put roots down somewhere," he confided in Tristan as he initially wavered about whether to leave. But eventually, he decided that he simply couldn't turn down his golden ticket.

"I wish I could take you all with me," he said after delivering the bittersweet news, to which his surrogate family reminded him he would "always have a place" at Skeldale.

With that, he took his leave – and, as we found out in the season 7 premiere, continues to reside in London, where he remains committed to his veterinary studies.

James had travelled to the English capital to deliver a talk at the Royal Veterinary College, accompanied by Helen, who took the opportunity to visit Jenny.

Like Carmody, her younger sister lives in London, where she's studying to become a nurse – hence the need for a long-overdue catch-up while James was busy educating the next generation.

"It's an incredible honour and shows just how far he has come in ten years, from that wee boy in Glasgow to the experienced vet we see now," said actor Nicholas Ralph, reflecting on his character's journey so far.

Speaking about what it's like to play a character for such a long period of time (5's iteration of All Creatures premiered in 2020), Ralph added: "It’s an incredible honour and privilege, and I’m still very grateful for it. To be with a character for that long, through major life milestones like getting married, having children and going off to war, is very special.

"With James, every year is a bit of a roller coaster. It’s rare to stay with a character for such a long time, and it really is a privilege."

After James's talk had finished, he caught up briefly with a couple of Carmody's peers, who informed him that his former housemate was unwell – their tone indicated it was nothing serious, certainly nothing some rest couldn't fix. But as a result, James missed a rare opportunity to catch up with his old pal.

"Please tell Mr Carmody I hope he's better soon, sorry I missed him," he replied.

Many a viewer will undoubtedly share in James's disappointment, also. But with All Creatures confirmed for another Christmas special and season 8 beyond that, here's hoping Carmody makes an appearance, even if it's only for a quick cup of tea.

All Creatures Great and Small season 7 will premiere on Thursday 17 September at 9pm on 5. All Creatures Great and Small: Behind the Magic will air at 9pm on Friday 18 September.
