Prosecutors Thursday announced the indictment of a man accused of ordering the killing of a Chicago postal worker.
Lyndell Deyoung, 35, has been charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of murder by acts creating a strong probability of death or great bodily harm in connection with the shooting death of 48-year-old Octavia Redmond, a postal carrier who was gunned down in July 2024.
He was arrested in August following a joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Chicago Police.
“This arrest is the culmination of exceptional cooperation among our local and federal law enforcement partners,” said Nicholas Bucciarelli, inspector in charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. “Postal inspectors will continue to thoroughly investigate any acts of violence toward our employees and ensure we do everything we can to deliver justice on behalf of victims of violent crime.”
Redmond was gunned down in July of 2024 while delivering mail on her route in the city’s West Pullman neighborhood. In July of this year, a 15-year-old boy who fired the fatal shots was sentenced to five years in a juvenile facility. He claimed that Deyoung threatened to kill him if he did not kill Redmond.
A third person, the alleged getaway driver, has also been arrested. The reason for Redmond’s murder remains unclear.
On the steps of the courthouse Thursday, members of the letter carriers carried signs and demanded justice for Redmond as well as changes to federal law involving crimes against postal workers.
“We need protection. We also need protection for the letter carriers who are out on the street still working each and every day. We want to go home to our families,” said Elise Foster, President of the Chicago Branch of the National Letter Carriers.

Deyoung’s family was also in court Thursday. They maintained his innocence, saying the only evidence against him is the statement of another person.
He will remain in the Cook County Jail until he is due back in court September 28th.
