SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – Kevin Medrano has been convicted of the February 2023 murder of Robert 'Bobby' Valencia in Santa Maria.
On Feb. 4, 2023, around 11:46 p.m., Medrano and another person approached a home on North Railroad Road in Santa Maria and fired six shots into the residence after Robert Valencia came to the door detailed the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office in a press release Thursday.
Valencia died from his injuries and another person inside the home was injured by the gunfire shared the local prosecutor's office.
Madrano and the other person fled the scene after opening fire noted the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office.
Investigators conducted a week-long canvass of the surrounding areas and pieced together surveillance footage from homes and businesses, FLOCK camera data, cell phone location records, social media messages and calls and firearms evidence to verify Medrano's movements before and after the fatal shooting explained the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office.
"This was an incredibly difficult case that required investigators and prosecutors to piece together a tremendous amount of circumstantial evidence to show what happened that night," shared District Attorney John T. Savrnoch. "I especially want to thank Detective Brian Santiago of the Santa Maria Police Department, who served as the lead detective and worked this case from the very beginning through trial. His dedication, persistence, and countless hours spent putting the pieces of this case together were instrumental in reaching this result. The Santa Maria Police Department’s persistence in locating and analyzing surveillance footage, digital evidence, cell phone records, and other evidence was critical to this conviction."
According to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office, the gathered evidence showed Medrano's vehicle moving through Santa Maria and placed him and the other person outside of the North Railroad home minutes before the shooting.
Medrano's phone was turned off during the 15-minute window surrounding the murder noted the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office.
In October of 2023, Medrano was arrested and ultimately convicted by a Santa Barbara County jury on Sep. 4, 2026, relayed the local prosecutor's office.
On Sep. 16, Judge Imel conducted a court trial on Medrano's remaining charge and special allegations and found him guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and all special allegations detailed the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office.
Medrano is currently scheduled to return to court for a sentencing on this conviction on Oct. 21, 2026, where he faces up to 50 years to life in state prison and that sentencing will follow two other pending felony cases against him explained prosecutors.

I also want to recognize Victim Witness Advocate Bianett Garcia, who supported Bobby's family throughout this nearly three-year process with tremendous compassion and consistency. Most importantly, we hope this verdict brings some measure of justice to Bobby's family and loved ones."
