The Blackhawks’ prospect showcase is in the books with a nice Hawks win on Tuesday. We’ve got a relatively quiet Wednesday before the guys get on the ice for real, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be loading up with preseason content. We’ll get the training camp roster and schedule later today. Thursday, there will be a couple practice sessions and we’ll hear from general manager Kyle Davidson and head coach Jeff Blashill. So get a little rest and be ready for the faucet to turn on, folks. We are so back!
Quick thought after the two prospect showcase games: I wanted to see more from Sacha Boisvert. I’m not saying he had two bad games; I thought he was pretty good for the most part. But after bulking up this summer and coming in with talk about trying to show he’s an NHL-ready player, he was really just one of the guys out there. By comparison, AJ Spellacy looked like a dude. He looked like an NHL player. Boisvert is going to be fine and there’s no room on the NHL roster at this point anyway, but I wanted more from Boisvert. Steven Ellis wrote up a list of the top prospect in all 32 organizations for Daily Faceoff on Tuesday. He named Anton Frondell the Blackhawks’ top prospect, but noted it’s a 1-2 punch for Chicago heading into the 2026-27 season:Roman Kantserov gets a special shoutout here – don’t be surprised if he has a better rookie season than Frondell. But that’s one heck of a 1-2 punch to have in the system, with Frondell being the guy with the higher long-term potential. He was productive in his draft year, playing in the second-tier pro league and often dominating his own age group. Frondell recently helped Sweden win gold at the World Juniors, scoring five goals and eight points en route to top forward honors. It wasn’t an out-of-this-world output by any means, but so few players impacted the game as often and effectively as Frondell did. I liked some of Frondell’s early NHL action, and I can’t wait to see him become an impact player for the Blackhawks. With Connor Bedard hurt to start the year, look for Frondell to be busy.

He broke it down into two pieces: one for the Eastern Conference and another for the Western Conference. Here’s what he said was the “strangest” story of the summer for the Blackhawks:That one big swing — trading for Bowen Byram and then giving him what was at the time the highest AAV of any defenseman in the league. It’s fair to say the move did not get great reviews, although Cale Makar’s deal reminds us that the blue-line market is still very much in flux.
Again: the hate for anything/everything Blackhawks is exhausting. But now much of what the Blackhawks did this summer was weird or strange. So I guess Byram’s deal was the “strangest” if we’re going to limit it to that phrasing. I found this graphic interesting in a piece from James Mirtle at The Athletic in which he wrote about players with limited NHL experience getting big money contracts. I’m old enough to remember when there were big question about the Blackhawks writing this contract: Source: The Athletic ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski asked some big questions of the stars at the the NHL/NHLPA player media tour last week in Las Vegas, including what they did this summer, suggestions for a team name for the expansion club in Texas, and more. Here’s what Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar said when asked if he could change or drop one rule in the NHL:“Just take off offsides completely. Play it like it’s roller hockey where you could just be anywhere on the ice. The whole game would change. Like, do you take the power play and let the guy just cherry pick all the way down? But then he might have a breakaway. And I think the whole game would be different.”
