A man employed by Chicago Public Schools as a bus aid was charged after a 12-year-old boy found a gun left on a school bus and fired it, the district said in a statement.
Steven Dixon Jr., 22, is facing one felony count of possession of a firearm near a school, three misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and one misdemeanor count of reckless conduct after police say he left a bag with a gun inside it unattended on a school bus and 12-year-old boy found it, removed the weapon and fired a round — striking a bus window.
The shot rang out around 2:25 p.m. on Monday outside Minnie Miñoso Academy along South Wallace Street near West 35th Street. After the shot was fired, Dixon allegedly took the gun and fled the scene, police said.
“Chicago Public Schools (CPS) prioritizes the safety and well-being of students and staff and has cooperated with the Chicago Police Department regarding Monday’s incident at Minnie Miñoso Academy,” CPS said in a statement. “CPS takes allegations of employee misconduct seriously and reviews them thoroughly under established policies, collective bargaining agreements, applicable laws, and due-process protections. CPS cannot disclose confidential personnel information but can confirm that the incident will be reviewed for potential misconduct.”
Video captured by an NBC Chicago photographer at the scene showed a Sunrise school bus surrounded by crime scene tape. The gunshot shattered a window, leaving behind a single bullet hole near the bottom corner.
In a letter to parents, Minnie Miñoso Academy principal Dr. Carrie Ann Cole said a shot was fired from inside a bus that was carrying students from the school, and all students were safe following the incident.
“…While I cannot provide further details for privacy reasons, I want to assure you that the gun did not enter school grounds and everyone is safe,” she said, in part. “Please know that we take situations like this one extremely seriously…”
The incident also prompted a soft lockdown at Bridgeport Catholic Academy, located approximately one-third of a mile away.
