Calling him a “very good candidate,” President Donald Trump has endorsed Darren Bailey in his bid to unseat Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Speaking to reporters prior to boarding a flight back to the United States from Ireland over the weekend, the president called Pritzker “a disaster” as governor, and said he’s fully supportive of Bailey’s attempt to win control of the governor’s mansion.
“I’ve already endorsed him. I’m all for Bailey,” he said. “I think JB Pritzker is a disaster as governor. You look at what’s happening with crime. If JB Pritzker can lose, but for some reason Democrats win there, I don’t know why. But Bailey is a very good candidate.”
The Bailey campaign has not yet responded to the endorsement, but Pritzker’s campaign criticized the endorsement.
“Just a few days after Darren Bailey returned home from Trumpapalooza, Donald Trump endorsed Bailey and sang his praises,” Pritzker’s campaign said. “This won’t come as a surprise to Illinoisans who know all about Bailey’s intense admiration for Trump. Despite the damage the president has done to our state, Bailey still supports Trump’s tariffs, cheered on his invasion of federal agents in our streets, and vowed to ‘roll the red carpet out’ for him.”
Bailey sought Trump’s endorsement prior to the 2022 gubernatorial election, and appeared with Trump at a rally in southern Illinois for the state’s Republican candidates.
In this election cycle Bailey has backed Trump on issues of public safety and immigration, but has also taken steps to push back on other issues, including Trump’s insulting of Pritzker’s physical appearance during his speech at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.
“The remarks made by President Trump about JB Pritzker at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner were unnecessary, unhelpful, and downright rude,” Bailey had said. “While we can and should find ways to debate policy publicly and disagree on the issues for the purpose of making our communities, state, and nation better; attacks on physical or personal traits do not move the needle forward; it just reminds regular voters why they hate politicians.”
He also distanced himself from Trump’s comments criticizing Pope Leo XIV, and has publicly disagreed with the president on issues pertaining to data centers and a handful of other issues.
Still, the endorsement will do nothing to change the Pritzker campaign’s strategy of tying Bailey to both Trump and to his rhetoric from the 2022 race, with the governor’s political operation running ads highlighting Bailey’s stances on abortion, LGBTQ issues and others.
