When it comes to applying makeup, it’s easy to fall into a routine. Personally, I’ll sometimes go years without changing anything about the way I do my makeup.
That said, as we get older, it’s often wise to make adjustments to our makeup routines—especially when it comes to products like blush. In fact, people with mature skin commonly make a few mistakes when it comes to applying blush. But fortunately, these mistakes are painless to remedy.
To learn more, we turned to makeup pro Shannon Spence, a makeup artist and prosthetic artist for editorial, bridal and film. She has worked in the makeup department for TV productions including The Last of Us, Murderbot, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
According to Spence, the most common blush blunder that she sees mature women make “is an honest mistake to make and a really understandable one.”
To better understand what kind of blush people with mature skin should be using, we also spoke with two other makeup artists: Shirley Pinkson Mañas, Head of Education for e.l.f. Beauty and co-founder of Well People, and Aisha Massac, founder of Iman’s Custom Faces and a licensed esthetician.

This Common Blush Mistake Can Make Mature Skin Look Older, According to a Makeup Artist
“The most common blush mistake that I see women with mature skin make is where they place their blush,” Spence tells Parade.
“Most of us were taught to smile and pop the color right onto the apples of our cheeks because that’s where our face naturally flushes,” she further explains. “As the face naturally settles and loses elasticity with age, the apples of our cheeks fall as well. For mature skin, that can become tricky.”
According to Spence, many people apply blush on the apples of their cheeks while they’re smiling—but the older you get, the more important it is to stop smiling while you put on your blush.
“When you smile, the apples lift temporarily, so you place the color there, and then the moment your face relaxes, [the blush] settles lower than you were aiming,” Spence tells Parade. “The placement of blush becomes lower and drags the face downward and that downward weight is what reads as tired or aged.”

How To Apply Blush on Mature Skin, According to a Makeup Artist
“Instead of putting color on the apples, place blush a bit higher above the apples of the cheek and blend upward and outward towards the hairline,” Spence explains. “Applying with a relaxed expression, facing forward towards a mirror is how you can place it accurately and high.”
Again, make sure to keep the face relaxed and not in a smile as you swipe on your blush.
“Once that base placement is on, building up the color will be much easier, and it immediately lifts the face, creating a more youthful appearance,” Spence says. “This small adjustment works so well because when the color sits higher on the cheekbone, it draws the eye upward and reads lifted instead of weighed down.”

Makeup Artists Share Their Favorite Type of Blush for Mature Skin
Though many people gravitate toward powdered blush, Spence advises against powders for aging skin. Instead, she is a big proponent of cream blushes.
“When I work on mature skin, I love using cream blushes,” she says. “I prefer using creams because they melt into the skin and give it a lit from within flush without sitting in fine lines the way that powders can.”
Additionally, as we age, it’s common for skin to become drier and more dehydrated—and since a cream blush can be moisturizing, it can help hydrate the skin’s appearance.
“Cream-based makeup softens the look of dry, dehydrated skin,” Pinkson Mañas tells Parade. “Choose formulations that have skin-loving benefits that leave skin looking and feeling hydrated.”
Massac adds that if you really want to use a powder on your face, you should do so “sparingly.”
“Do not powder cheeks, especially,” she stresses. “If you powder the whole face or more than select areas, you will highlight the fine lines and wrinkles and potentially look older.”
