India vs Afghanistan 1st T20I has concluded, as the Men in Blue take a lead of 1-0 after beating the Afghans by 7 wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Sunday. After the match, Varun Chakravarthy was present at the post-match press conference, answering the media. He shared some valuable insights on Indian batting.
Shreyas Iyer’s side went rampant in the match from the very start; they dismantled the Afghanistan batting order as the Afghans could stitch only one partnership that led them to go past the 150-run mark. Coming out to bat, it was a storm from Abhishek Sharma that led the India National Cricket Team to win the game easily on the night.
During the post-match press conference, Varun Chakravarthy was asked about India’s dominant play against spin in the game; he highlighted India’s strength against spin. He believes that the Men in Blue batters are good against spinners and bowling to them is a difficult task. Varun Chakravarthy revealed that if spinners come to bowl, the batters will smack them all around the park.
He said (as quoted by RevSportz) "While sitting in the dressing room, I was just telling someone that, against our team’s batting line-up, you can’t bowl spin. So, if you bowl spin against our batting line-up, they’re just going to smack left, right and centre. We are just so used to playing spinners."
"So, yeah, one of the best batting line-ups we have, our top eight batsmen. Anyone can take on any spinner in this world. I have personally bowled against them, played against them. I know how hard it is," the 35-year-old went on to add.
Varun Chakravarthy opens up on learning after England tour
Varun Chakravarthy was also asked about his recent form and the England tour. He stated that it was good for him, but the team could not win the series. He believes that even if the team failed to win, they have learnt a lot from the 4-0 loss against England. They believe in the mindset of learning even if things do not go well.
He further added, "It is just good, brother. The thing is, the England tour was also good for me. Just because we did not win, it does not mean that it has gone to waste. You get to learn a lot if you lose also. So, there is nothing that goes to waste and, as we said today, even if things would not have gone our way, we would have had the same mindset of learning something."
Abhishek Sharma fired up during India's run chase
Coming to the match, India won the toss and elected to field first, as Jasprit Bumrah returned to the side and picked a wicket in his first over. Then the wickets kept on falling as the Afghans were reduced to 5 inside 50 runs. A solid 64* from Azmatullah Omarzai helped them post 156/8 in 20 overs.
While chasing, it was Abhishek Sharma’s carnage that took the game away inside the powerplay. He and Ishan Kishan stitched a 121-run partnership, as the former scored 82 runs off 32 deliveries, and India won the match comfortably by 7 wickets in 13.4 overs.
