The selection news came on the night of August 14, leaving Shahbaz Ahmed with very little time. So, Shahbaz couldn’t celebrate his selection call; instead, he immediately contacted Bappa Singh, an inspector in the Intelligence Branch of West Bengal Police.
'I genuinely gave up hope'
Singh had earlier helped several Bengal cricketers with urgent passport work, including India legend Jhulan Goswami. And once again, that inspector helped Shahbaz in his difficult situation.
His new passport was ready by 3 pm on Monday. Shahbaz then rushed to catch his flight at 5:30 pm and finally made it to Zimbabwe with the Indian team. He did not get a chance to make his international debut on that tour. Still, the selection was a huge moment for him.
Shahbaz recalled: “I genuinely gave up hope; I was heartbroken when I was supposed to be happy. I was like, ‘Arey yaar, mujhe ek mauka mila hai Indian team mein. Woh bhi nikal gaya’.”
