For all the horror wrought by World War II, Siegfried and Tristan's relationship in All Creatures Great and Small has undoubtedly been strengthened by the experience.
When the younger Farnon brother left Darrowby to serve his country with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, his elder sibling not only worried dreadfully about his safety but also missed him far more than he had anticipated.
Though cut from a very different cloth – a source of frequent frustration for Siegfried in particular – Tristan quickly made him realise just how much he meant to him.
View oEmbed on the source websiteThe pair then grew closer after Tristan's return, with Siegfried supporting him through a particularly difficult moment that laid bare the psychological toll the war had taken on him. Although they had spent much of their lives clashing, they finally began to appreciate one another properly, bridging the gap between them.
"The professional respect is made clear in this series, and I think Siegfried's own sense of Tristan has stopped him really thinking of him in that way before," said Samuel West.
"Eventually the evidence is clear that he's turned into a very good vet. He's been trusted with his official responsibilities and, veterinary wise, he's had a good war. There is a moment of big change between them, and it's overdue."
That shift, in turn, encourages Siegfried to ease up on Tristan.
"If he really loves his brother, he has to let him make his own mistakes," West added. "It's taken him quite a long time to get there, but I do think he's there now. I have to make a few of my own as well, so it would be churlish of me to deny him the opportunity to learn from his mistakes.
"I do think there's a big change in our relationship now. There's a lot of blood under the bridge."
Callum Woodhouse echoed those comments, discussing how their dynamic "has evolved a lot over the years" and "continues to grow throughout this series".
"After their moment and connection in the church at the end of the last series, it's definitely taken their relationship to a whole new level," he said.
But the "bickering and squabbling" hasn't disappeared entirely, teased Woodhouse – and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Season 7 of All Creatures Great and Small opens in 1946, with "Skeldale House once again full – and livelier than ever – as familiar faces reunite under one roof and look ahead to a hopeful new chapter".

A host of familiar faces have returned to Darrowby, including Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot, Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall, Rachel Shenton as Helen Herriot and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon.
Also reprising their roles are Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey, alongside her cherished Pekingese Tricki, Tony Pitts as Helen's father Richard, Imogen Clawson as her sister Jenny, Maimie McCoy as Dorothy, Mollie Winnard as Maggie and Gaia Wise as Charlotte.
Caolan McCarthy has also joined the cast as rival vet, Granville Bennett, alongside a raft of new guest stars.
All Creatures Great and Small seasons 1-6 are available on 5 streaming, with season 7 premiering on Thursday 17 September at 9pm on 5.
