Serenity Coleman from New Bedford, Massachusetts, has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Howard University beginning in the fall of 2027. She wrote on social media:
“I’m so blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to pursue my academic and athletic career with Howard University!! This has always been my dream, and I am so grateful for my family, teammates, and coaches. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without your constant love, support, and sacrifices. A special thank you to Coach Nic and the Howard coaching staff for believing in my potential and giving me this incredible opportunity. I am deeply honored to join a program that is making history and to contribute to the Howard University swimming legacy. GO BISON!!!”
A rising senior at New Bedford High School, Coleman spends her club career with GrenFin Aquatics. Back in February 2025, she captured the state title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.32 at the MIAA Division 1 State Championships. With that swim, she became the first swimmer from New Bedford to claim a state championship title since 2016.
She secured two runner-up finishes at the Division 1 State Meet and a school-record time of 56.43 in the 100-yard butterfly, and has anchored several record-breaking relay teams for the New Bedford Whalers. She has earned the Big Three Conference MVP award four times, alongside four consecutive Standard-Times Swimmer of the Year honors.

Based on her best times, Coleman adds immediate depth to the team’s butterfly group. Her lifetime best in the 100 and 200 butterfly events would have made the NEC ‘A’ final this past season. Lyssa Napier won the conference title in the 100 fly for Howard in a 54.54.
Coleman will arrive next fall as a member of the class of 2031. She is the first announced commitment for the class.
