On one hand, playing in the first Monday Night Football game of the year is a privilege but also a long waiting game.
For Broncos Country, it means waiting nearly an entire week after the NFL season kicks off. That’s because the league now kicks off on Wednesdays—something they said they wouldn’t do, play on Wednesdays—and we’re already two games into the season.
Now we wait two days without NFL football, then the rest of the league plays on Sunday, and finally Denver faces the Chiefs in Kansas City this Monday.
After losing in the AFC Championship Game in January, sans Bo Nix, it’s been a long offseason of waiting. Now we must wait even more for Broncos football.
It’s tough for fans, but apparently the players are feeling it as well.
“Honestly at the end of the day, it’s exciting to be able to have the opportunity to open up the season, Monday Night Football, all the games are going to be done, college is done, everyone’s played Sunday, Sunday night’s done,” Courtland Sutton said on Wednesday. “The only game that’s going to be on is Chiefs-Broncos, and that’s what’s exciting. Yes, we have an extra 30 hours as you would say to wait to be able to get that first game off, but it’s exciting though.”
It was the same day Sutton called Nix a “caged mountain lion.”
“It’s exciting to go out there and play another team,” Nix said of the Broncos first game. “It’s really exciting and I know that our guys are going to respond well. I feel like I have a great group with me that I’m going in here with. I can’t wait.”
Nix has as much or more to prove as any Broncos player following his broken ankle and surgeries to repair it. Not only that, but it’s his third year, where expectations have ramped up significantly.
Nix has started off slowly in his first two seasons and turned the ball over a lot in early games. In fact, he threw seven interceptions in the Broncos first two games of the last two seasons combined.
But it’s not just Nix that has to get off to a hot start.
“And we go all [off]season, everyone. Everyone goes all [off]season waiting for Week 1,” head coach Sean Payton said on Wednesday. “So it’s an important game because it’s the one we’re playing and yet every year it points to your case about it’s not necessarily the end all be all, but we certainly like to get off to a better start.”
Obviously, Denver wants to win their first game of the season no matter who they play. But facing the Chiefs makes it even more interesting. A win on Monday gives the Broncos a better chance of winning the AFC West. And this rivalry game is always interesting.
Denver nearly beat the Chiefs in K.C. in 2024 until a Wil Lutz field goal was blocked at the end of the game. So, even the Broncos kicker can’t wait to kickoff.
“Yes, I think everybody’s just ready to play,” Lutz explained. “Obviously [QB] Bo [Nix] is one of our leaders, and we know what Bo’s capable of and he’s obviously a super talented quarterback. I think the hardest part about playing on Monday night is we have to wait. So I think everybody’s chomping at the bit right now and Monday night will be here before we know it.”
It’s been a long offseason, Broncos fans. And that’s continuing this entire weekend.
But as Lutz says, Monday night will be here before we know it.
