A school district in northwest Indiana banned students from using metal drink containers because of the potential that they could be used as weapons, administrators announced on Wednesday.
School City of Hammond, that includes 16 schools, said the metal bottles and cups that are “very popular among students” are banned from all school properties “effective immediately.”
“As you all know, metal drink containers are very popular among students (i.e., Yeti, Stanley, etc.). Unfortunately, these drink containers are blunt objects that can be used as a dangerous weapon. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of our scholars, all metal drink containers are banned from all school properties, effective immediately,” the district said in a statement sent to parents.
Students are allowed to bring plastic drink containers as long as they follow any further restrictions that exist at their school or classroom.
The district-wide ban applies to the following schools:
