Prince Harry spoke to his father within the first week of his return to the UK, The i Paper understands – despite reports that they have had no contact.
Well-placed sources have suggested the King is likely to meet his younger son and his family privately away from the cameras over the coming weeks and months, in an effort to rebuild their relationships despite a briefing war that has erupted between palace officials and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s camp in the past few days.
Repairing relations with the royals was one of several reasons why Harry and Meghan decided to return to the UK, but a source close to the couple told The i Paper that the success or failure of efforts to improve family relations will not drive them away.
“Their relationship with the Royal Family I don’t think is likely to influence where they want to live,” the source said.
Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are said to be frustrated by the behaviour of palace officials but they make a distinction between the actions of the “institution” and family relationships. They blame the King’s advisors, even though Charles firmly believes the Sussexes can never be half-in and half-out, undertaking official royal duties while making money commercially.
After a fairly smooth start, tensions have erupted in the past few days between the palace and the Sussexes after the King asked the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Benyon, to send out a letter to senior government officials, the military, and lord lieutenants, making it clear that, as far as he is concerned, Harry and Meghan remain private individuals.
‘Public figures not private citizens’
As The i Paper revealed they insist they can never entirely be private individuals. Instead, they see themselves as public figures because Harry is the son of the King and the brother of the future monarch. But the letter was blamed yesterday for Uganda’s military chief announcing his country was pulling out of next year’s Invictus Games in Birmingham.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of the country’s president, said: “In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games. We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.”
There was no official confirmation of the decision from Uganda, the 26th country to enter the games for injured military veterans which were created by Harry, but a source close to the Sussexes claimed the Lord Chamberlain’s letter was the source of the confusion. “This is the real time consequences,” the source said. “Uganda government officials have specifically said it was because of this letter.”’
Charles, as head of the armed forces, supports initiatives to help veterans, and will be invited to attend the games in Birmingham, which have received £26 million from the Ministry of Defence. It is understood palace officials were willing to explain to Uganda that the King supported the games but the monarch would not say anything publicly yesterday.
‘Not on speaking terms with William’
There remains little prospect of Harry and his brother Prince William patching up their differences in the foreseeable future, according to sources. The two brothers and their wives are not on speaking terms.
The Prince and Princess of Wales and their advisors are doing everything they can to avoid being drawn into the public drama over the return of the Sussexes, although they are said to be “in lockstep” with the King and are thought to have been consulted about the way the palace is handling the issue.
The two brothers are not expected to be face-to-face at any public engagements in the near future but the looming 30th anniversary of their mother Princess Diana’s death next July could see them potentially at the same event.
Nothing has been firmed up yet but it is understood that several television documentaries are also planned to mark the anniversary at the end of August 2027 and both brothers are likely to be asked to participate. So far, Harry at least has not agreed to contribute to anything. Sources close to him have also played down reports that he and Meghan are making their own documentary about Diana.
William, 44, has moved on with his life and no longer thinks regularly about his brother, according to some friends. Ingrid Seward, the royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said she doubted that the two brothers would ever repair their fractured relationship.
“If they saw each other in public, I’m sure William would say hello but it becomes easier just not to talk after a while,” she said. “It’s easier for William to just stay right out of it.
“You also have to remember he comes from a long line of Windsor men who don’t like confrontation. They are not good at emotional confrontation and they don’t have to face it. There’s always someone else there to deal with it for them.”
