Sky F1's Martin Brundle suspects George Russell has every reason to look back on Monza with a sense of frustration, after a race that promised to give his championship challenge a much-needed shot in the arm instead ended with his Mercedes teammate strengthening his grip on the title fight.
Russell’s predicament was particularly cruel because the weekend had presented him with an unusual advantage.
Kimi Antonelli was condemned to start from the rear of the grid following an engine penalty, handing Russell a rare opportunity to chip substantially into the Italian’s championship lead.
The numbers looked encouraging before the lights went out: Russell was 59 points adrift, while Antonelli faced the daunting task of recovering from 19th.
Yet Antonelli had other ideas.
The young Italian immediately set about dismantling the disadvantage, picking his way through the field and reaching 12th before the race was interrupted by a red flag. Once the action resumed, his progress continued at startling speed, and by lap 16 he was already threatening Russell’s position.
What had begun as Russell’s chance to fight back was rapidly turning into another demonstration of Antonelli’s extraordinary momentum.
Antonelli turns Russell’s opportunity into nightmare
The strategic battle that followed proved particularly painful for Russell.
Mercedes left its championship contender out on hard tyres while Antonelli and Max Verstappen stopped for fresh rubber. Antonelli then embarked on another relentless pursuit, clawing back the time lost in the pit lane and slicing through the field.
Brundle believes that was the moment the weekend began to sting for Russell.
"Russell was leading on the hard tyres and he wasn't called in," wrote Brundle in his Sky Sports column.
"Right behind him, his team-mate Antonelli and rival [Max] Verstappen did pit to shed their used medium-compound tyres. Russell said in the post-race interviews that he thought both cars were staying out.
"In the team press release, he's quoted very diplomatically as saying the team split strategies as it was not clear whether track advantage ahead of all traffic was the right way to go, or taking on fresh tyres. My guess is he's feeling bruised by how that played out.
"Antonelli set about the task of catching up the 15 seconds lost, including passing people like Norris and Hamilton, and once again he made impressive progress. Verstappen became embroiled in a battle with both McLarens, including the feisty Piastri and so it became effectively an all silver two-horse race. Game on."

It was, ultimately, a race Russell could have done without. Antonelli reeled him in during the closing stages, swept into the lead and converted his extraordinary recovery into another victory.
Rather than reducing the championship deficit, Russell actually lost further ground.
The gap between the Mercedes pair expanded from 59 points to 66. For a driver trying to hunt down his teammate in a championship battle, that is the sort of Sunday that can linger long after the champagne has dried.
Wolff refuses to call time on Russell’s title hopes
The mathematics are becoming increasingly uncomfortable for Russell.
Antonelli now possesses a commanding advantage and, with the championship moving into its final stretch, the Italian increasingly looks like the driver with momentum, confidence and the results to match.
Yet Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is refusing to close the door on Russell’s title ambitions.
"Is that the championship decided? I don't know. It's too early to say.
"We have 10 races to go, or maybe nine, I don't know, and it's motor racing. It's a technical sport, things can break, accidents can happen, and that's why we have to do our best job for both drivers, continuing to bring our best game."
Wolff's caution is understandable. Formula 1 has a long memory for championships that appeared settled before suddenly being turned upside down by a mechanical failure, a crash or a single disastrous weekend.
But Russell now needs precisely that kind of reversal.
At Monza, the stars had appeared to align for him. His teammate was starting 19th, the championship gap was within striking distance and Mercedes had a golden opportunity to swing momentum back towards its more experienced driver.
Instead, Antonelli turned a 19th-place start into victory. And according to Brundle, Russell may have left the Italian sunshine feeling every one of those 66 points.
