‘Heartbreaking: 6-year-old struck and killed by school bus driver in Frankfort

A 6-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday after she was struck by a school bus driver in south suburban Frankfort on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Aberdeen Road, police said. When police arrived at the scene, they found 6-year-old Jenna Menias unresponsive and with serious injuries from being struck by the bus on the block where her family lives.

Witnesses and first responders jumped in to immediately start CPR and other live saving measures before she was transported to a local hospital, where she later died, police said.

Aerial video captured by NBC Chicago Sky 5 of the scene showed two yellow school buses near several marked police cars and emergency vehicles on the residential street. Many other vehicles were parked on the street in the area, and a crowd of people could also be seen nearby. A purple backpack could also be seen laying in the street.

“This tragic incident has had a profound impact on those involved, their families, and our community,” Frankfort police said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, loved ones and all those impacted as they navigate this difficult time.”

The bus involved in the crash was a Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 bus carrying Frankfort School District 157-C students, a spokesperson for Lincoln-Way said.

There were several students on the bus when Menias was struck and they were evaluated at the scene by emergency responders before being reunited with their families, the district said.

“It is with great concern that we share details regarding an incident that occurred today during the afternoon student commute,” the district said in a message to parents and faculty. “One of our Frankfort 157-C students was involved in an accident involving a school bus. Frankfort Police Department was quickly on scene, and the student was transported to receive medical care.”

District 157-C and Lincoln Way Transportation are working with authorities during the investigation, the district said.

“We know that an event of this nature deeply affects our entire school family. We encourage students who may be feeling worried or upset to reach out to a trusted adult, teacher, social worker, or other member of our school support team,” the district said.

Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle asked for prayers for the child’s family, witnesses and first responders after the crash.

“Heartbreaking news again involving a child,” Ogle said in a post on social media, also referencing the horrifying scene that recently unfolded in the area involving Corie A. Walsh, a 40-year-old mother of four kids, who was charged with three counts of first-degree murder after she was found inside her home last week attempting to harm herself and her 2-year-old son was found unresponsive with injuries that later led to his death.
