NFL Insider Says Kyler Gordon “Should Be Back Sooner, Rather Than Later”

One of the more frequently discussed topics for the Chicago Bears this summer has been Kyler Gordon, who will open the season on IR while he recovers from a calf injury that wiped out his entire offseason program and training camp. But perhaps there is some reason for optimism after all.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Gordon will leave the team to work with a personal trainer in hopes of accelerating his return, and that barring a setback, Gordon “should be back sooner rather than later.”

Perhaps Some Optimism for Kyler Gordon

At face value, that’s terrific news. Gordon will miss the first four weeks of the season because he’s on IR, so we now know the earliest we will see him back on the field on gameday is when Chicago visits the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 5. Still, that seems like a long shot.

Rapoport said Gordon hopes to return to the team in a few weeks, then return to practice shortly thereafter. According to the rules, the Bears can open a 21-day practice window for Gordon after the fourth game of the season. That’s likely the window Rapoport is referring to for practicing with the team. That would likely rule him out for at least the Packers game, with minimal practice time and no offseason program or training camp under his belt.

Week 6 in Atlanta or Week 7 at Soldier Field against the Patriots seems more likely for Gordon’s return on this current timeline, barring a setback. If Chicago opens Gordon’s 21-day practice window and Gordon isn’t deemed healthy enough or ready to return during that window, the Bears would then be forced to place him on season-ending IR, release him, or trade him.

The Bears could also open his 21-day window later than Week 5, pushing this timeline into midseason and reducing the chance he can’t be activated within the window.

Two things are true here: Gordon’s absence and injury (following an injury-plagued 2025 season) have frustrated everyone, and Gordon is likely included in that feeling. It’s also inarguably true that the Bears’ defense is better when Gordon is on the field, as evidenced by the second half of the Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field in January.
