The Royals have released infielder Brandon Drury, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. He is now a free agent and eligible to sign with any club.
Drury, 34, signed a minor league deal with the Royals in the offseason. On the whole, this year’s Triple-A numbers don’t look great. In 212 plate appearances, he has a .226/.354/.362 line and 90 wRC+.
For what it’s worth, the recent trend lines have been better. In his first 51 plate appearances, he had a 5.9% walk rate, 39.2% strikeout rate and .213/.275/.277 line. In late April, he was transferred to the development list. He then played a few Complex League games in June before returning to Omaha. In his most recent 161 plate appearances, he has an 18.6% walk rate, 21.7% strikeout rate and .231/.379/.392 line. Offense is up at the Triple-A level this year but that latter line still leads to an above-average 105 wRC+, indicating Drury has been 5% better than league average in that span.
Drury has had major league success but it’s been a few years. He hit 28 home runs in 2022 and 26 long balls the year after but had a big swoon in 2024 when he hit .169/.242/.228 for the Angels. Once upon a time, it looked like 2025 was going to be a comeback season for him. He signed a minor league deal with the White Sox and hit .410/.439/.821 in spring training. He seemed a lock for an Opening Day roster spot until he broke his thumb towards the end of camp. After the thumb healed, he hit .214/.338/.323 in the minors last year.
As mentioned, this year’s numbers haven’t been overwhelming but he has been better lately, so perhaps that stint on the development list helped him get something back on track. He will see if any offers are available for him but the minor leagues are winding down for the year and he wouldn’t be postseason eligible with any club that signs him now.
