An unsettling new exhibit opened in Chicago over the Labor Day holiday weekend, offering a glimpse at the artifacts and history surrounding some of the world’s most notorious serial killers.
“Serial Killer: The Exhibition” opened Saturday at the Cinespace Chicago Film Studios on West 15th Street.
According to organizers it marks “the world’s largest private collection of authentic serial killer artifacts,” including some of the Chicago-area most prominent like H.H. Holmes and John Wayne Gacy.
“The Chicago engagement marks a major evolution of the international exhibition, pairing more than 2,100 authentic artifacts with a new locally focused exploration of the cases that left a lasting imprint on the city’s history, criminal investigation and collective memory,” a release on the exhibit stated.
In the Gacy exhibit, things like Gacy’s paintings, authentic documents, investigative evidence and other objects are on display.
Organizers have acknowledged, however, the seriousness of the content in the exhibit, telling NBC Chicago’s “Matt in the Morning” that their goal is not to glorify, but rather inform.
“Glorifying would be, ‘Hey Gacy’s a great guy.’ We don’t say that,” said true crime filmmaker and a consultant on the exhibition John Borowski. “Here it’s about history and studying not only who they were but the case and the forensics behind it. There’s so much involved, even with their apprehension, so it’s not just about the gore.”
Organizers have billed it as a “true crime experience” and a “journey through history.”
The exhibit runs every Wednesday through Sunday through the end of January with varying hours. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
