The Bends, a Louisiana-bred garage rock band, has risen well beyond the college scene in recent years, but it’s starting off its fall tour in the same way the band did — in a college bar.
The Nashville-based group met in college at Louisiana State University, where Hayden Field, vocalist and guitarist of The Bends, was introduced to the rest of the band at a bar. Field, guitarist Ian Marmande, drummer Jacob Rhodes and bassist Chase Perkins practiced for six months before finding gigs.
“I just remember Ian was super excited to start a band, so I think that energy kind of rubbed off on the rest of us,” Field said. “We were just having a blast.”
A long-time songwriter, Field said the band prides itself in taking songwriting seriously, and he likes to build his songs around real circumstances from college and beyond. “Makeup,” their original song that country music artist Zach Bryan promoted on his Instagram story, was loosely inspired by a girl he knew in real life.
“A song is built out from a truth,” Field said. “Not every single word is descriptive truth from a real life experience.”
Field said the band knew they were growing beyond the college sphere after getting a call from Broadcast Music, Inc. on the way home from a LSU ski trip. Now, they are making headlines in venues across the country, even appearing on large festival stages such as Lollapalooza.
Despite The Bends’ upgrade from college bars and house parties, Field said the group is proud to go back to its roots for the tour kickoff, with the hope of expanding to places out west. Field also has family ties to The University of Alabama, with a cousin who currently attends and two older sisters who have graduated.
“It’s kind of good to start where you came from and remember that’s why you started doing it, and that’s why it’s so fun,” Field said.
The Bends uses its music to bring people together in a quintessentially “college” way. Field said he is surprised by students’ enthusiasm toward live band performances as opposed to DJs, as well as their receptiveness to hear the band’s original music.
“It feels like you’re playing a part in, hopefully, some of these people’s best days in college,” Field said. “That’d be the goal to be like ‘Oh, I remember when I saw The Bends.’ I think that’s what we all would strive for.”
As the band gains more experience, Field said their level of passion and energy hasn’t changed since the beginning. The Bends may be bigger than before, but its ties to college culture are ever present. Tickets are available for its Two Dimes show Tuesday at 8 p.m.
“If I was talking to early on [in college] Hayden, I would honestly say focus a little bit more on music,” Field said. “I’d be like, spend as much time as you can with your music because you’re gonna actually get to do that for your livelihood.”
