ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Various unions marched in the annual Labor Day parade in Rochester.
Before the parade, local leaders spoke about the importance of unions, the changing workplace and the threats they face. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with people about the future of unions.
Dan Maloney with the Rochester Labor Council said rapid advancements in technology like drones and AI pose a threat to all sectors of the workforce — union and non-union. From self-driving cars replacing delivery drivers to robots assisting in medical procedures, technology is changing the workplace.
“I spoke with some of our members in education and was surprised to learn that AI controlled robotic teachers are being tested,” Maloney said. “A.I. controlled self-driving tractors are plowing, planting and harvesting in the fields.”
Maloney said these tech advancements have a lot of positives, but regulation is necessary to ensure the U.S. workforce and economy can adjust.
“We definitely have to ensure these technologies A.I., robots, drones and the supercomputers that run them are all built in the USA, designed and built in the USA for national security and our economic security,” Maloney said.
People at the parade said they feel the same. John Weis said he doesn’t think AI could ever replace the type of labor union workers do.
Weis was in a union for about 35 years and spoke about how they protect workers.
“They work together, and they make sure that our workers are not taken advantage of by some of the companies at all,” Weis said. “The company. But someone will take advantage of people. We need to stop that. It’s very important.”
Katherine DaCosta told Stablow her mother wasn’t a fan of unions — until she became a part of one.
“She said I got out of my bed to vote no, but it went through 1199,” DaCosta said. “And she said her she’s so grateful for the pension she got. She got one from someplace else. And it stayed the same for 30 years.”
William Turner said unions will always be important.
“I do think the benefit of unions will never expire, they’ll still continue to be there,” Turner said. “Even with the challenge of AI I’m still in favor of unions.”
According to a recent poll by Gallup, 71% of Americans support unions — including 89% of Democrats and 52% of Republicans. This is the highest level of support for unions Gallup has recorded since the 1960s.
