Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg is staying with the team. Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group was among those to relay that Greenberg is removing his name from consideration for the job running the front office of the NHL’s Red Wings. It was reported last month that Greenberg was a candidate to switch sports. That move was believable because Greenberg has some hockey experience. Not only did he play hockey in high school and college, he moved there in his professional life as well. After getting some work in baseball for the Pirates, Diamondbacks and Cubs, he got a job as assistant general manager with the Blackhawks in the NHL in 2022.
But in 2023, Scott Harris got the job as president of baseball operations for the Tigers in MLB. He and Greenberg had previously worked together with the Cubs. Harris lured Greenberg back to baseball by giving him the general manager job with the Tigers.
In addition to his hockey experience, Greenberg might have been open to a fairly non-disruptive job switch. An executive seeking a new opportunity often has to switch cities but that wouldn’t be the case here. The Tigers and Red Wings are both owned by the Ilitch family via their company Ilitch Holdings. If Greenberg had pursued and then landed the new gig, he wouldn’t have to move city and maybe could have kept using some of the same amenities or facilities.
It’s unknown how much thought Greenberg gave to switching back to hockey again. Per Woodbery, Greenberg says he admires the Red Wings and was honored to be considered for the job but is committed to the Tigers. For the baseball club, they are not having their best season but are presumably happy to keep their front office together, as the alternative might have required changing things up by giving Greenberg’s duties to someone else in the front office or perhaps making an external hire.
