Spencer Korwin, a Team USA Triathlete, was found dead under the dock of the Pridwin Hotel in Long Island on Wednesday after a morning swim on a family vacation. Korwin was 38 years old.
His wife notified hotel staff after he did not return several hours after going out for a morning swim. His body was found later that afternoon after a several-hour-long search, which included two ambulances, EMS Volunteers, as well as marine and air units.
According to a report from People, Shelter Island Police Department Sargent Jack Thilberg said that the drowning is believed to be accidental, though the investigation remains ongoing.
John Kirincic, a master mariner for the Southold Police Department, added that the weather conditions were nothing out of the ordinary. However, the current gets strong from the narrow passage where the tide flows.
In a New York Post report, Korwin’s wife, Carly, touched on his love for his family, which included her and their two daughters.

“He wrote me and the girls notes all the time and hung them around the apartment,” Korwin’s wife Carly said in the report from the New York Post. “He was filled with surprises and hugs just because… he had automated texts set up twice a day just to remind me that he loves me, I’m a wonderful mom and wife.”
Korwin represented the US in 2012 at the Barfoot and Thompson Age-Group Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, where he finished 36th with a total time of 1:20:43, including a swim time of 13:27, which was the 32nd-fastest of the field.
A GoFundMe has been created for Korwin’s family with a $500,000 goal. At the time of publication, the fundraiser has reached over $361,000.
