Nicolas Cage has responded to Prime Video's cancellation of Spider-Noir after one season, putting a surprisingly positive spin on the disappointing development.
The series followed cynical private investigator Ben Reilly (Cage), who once protected New York City as a masked vigilante known as The Spider.
When we find him in Spider-Noir, Ben has hung up his mask after a personal tragedy – but a dangerous new case lures him out of that self-imposed retirement.
Although not technically classed as a spin-off from the Spider-Verse film franchise, the show was clearly influenced by Cage's similar voice role in the hit animated adventures.
Presented in both "authentic" black-and-white and a vivid colourisation, Spider-Noir has multiple Emmy nominations for its technical achievements – while Cage has also earned praise.
Still, the glowing reception was not enough to secure its future, with the show's sizeable budget being cited as a key factor in the decision.

"For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man," he told Deadline. "Onwards, upwards, inwards."
Previously, Cage had told Variety that everyone working on Spider-Noir had "achieved what we set out to do" and felt confident that the first season "works on its own".
Indeed, rather than leave viewers with an earth-shattering cliffhanger, or various other unresolved plot threads, Spider-Noir actually closes its case in time for a satisfying finale.
Co-showrunner Oren Uziel had expressed some interest in a second chapter, explaining that the "magical" trait of its premise is that it can host a wide variety of mysteries.
"All it takes is another client to knock on that door, and then comes a new set of cases, a new set of problems and a new adventure to go on," he teased (via THR). "So [it's] conceived to be as many seasons as we want to go."
Spider-Noir marked Cage's first lead role in a television series, with recent rumours suggesting he could remain on the small screen for the next run of True Detective.
That remains tentative for now, though, with Cage's next confirmed role being legendary American football coach and broadcaster John Madden in biopic titled Madden, which premieres on Prime Video on 18 November.
Despite taking few TV roles in his career, Cage told Deadline that he has always been "friendly to streaming," citing a period in his career when he worked largely in non-theatrical films (i.e. direct to digital download, streaming or DVD/Blu-ray).
"[The media would say], 'Oh, he's doing straight-to-streaming movies', like it was unheard of, like, shame on me. But now, everything is going that way," he said. "I knew streaming would ultimately keep actors working and keep the work viewable."
