This time, the scene could not have been more different. Overwhelmed with emotion, the 30-year-old leaped from his car to share the triumph with his ecstatic parents, his cheering garage crew, and thousands of roaring fans.
Hearing the final radio confirmation from his team, the raw relief and joy erupted instantly: "Let's go, let's go! I've been waiting for that one!" he yelled into his radio as he was informed by his race engineer of his fate, while his Alpine garage crew morphed into a sea of limbs.
A masterclass at the Temple of Speed
Unlike his shock 2020 victory, which relied heavily on chaotic race conditions, Saturday's qualifying triumph was down to pure speed and precision execution. Alpine’s package clicked immediately, leveraging powerful Mercedes engine muscle around Monza's rapid straights.
Gasly laid down an ominous marker early, sitting in an impressive third place after the initial Q3 attempts.
On his final flyer, he executed a tactical masterstroke by picking up a crucial aerodynamic slipstream behind Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. Crossing the line, he snatched the top spot from George Russell and Oscar Piastri by a razor-thin margin of just 0.060 seconds.
Reflecting on the flawless qualifying session, the Alpine star highlighted how everything came together from the opening minutes.
"From the first lap in Q1, I felt very good in the car, trying to chip away a little bit every single session. It felt like a very good lap," the Frenchman explained.
"I am so happy, it's been nine years trying to chase and get the opportunity to get a pole position. To win my first race in Monza, get my first pole on this track, I think it's something special around here.”
Chess games and praise from rivals
The sensational result caught even his closest competitors off guard.
Front-row rival George Russell had been tipped as the pre-qualifying favorite, but the Mercedes driver graciously applauded Gasly's stunning effort, revealing a lighthearted moment between the two just before taking to the track.
"Massive congratulations to Pierre, because that's an incredible performance," Russell said.
"We actually finished a game of chess 15 minutes before qualifying and he beat me there, and I thought: 'I think I'll beat you in qualifying'. And here we are, he's ahead of me again.
"I was disappointed not to get the pole position, it was a bit messy with [Max] Verstappen opening the lap, I did the lap super close. But Pierre and Alpine have been super fast, even from Q1."
Italian Grand Prix - Qualifying resultsWith Gasly and Russell occupying the front row, Oscar Piastri and local favorite Charles Leclerc locked down the second row.
However, the McLaren driver’s starting position remains uncertain after being summoned by FIA stewards for a potential impeding infringement, threatening a grid penalty ahead of Sunday's race.
