The Diamondbacks announced that outfielder Tommy Troy has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, fellow outfielder Jorge Barrosa has been designated for assignment.
Barrosa, 25, was signed as an amateur out of Venezuela in 2017. Prospect evaluators generally praised his speed and his defense. Offensively, the switch-hitter showed a good approach at the plate in the minors, but with limited power. Arizona gave him a roster spot in November of 2022, to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.
Since then, he has mostly been in the minors. He exhausted his three option years from 2023 to 2025, producing lackluster numbers in Triple-A Reno along the way. Over those three years, he stepped to the plate 1,325 times for the Aces. His 13.1% walk rate and 18.3% strikeout rate were good figures but he hit just 29 home runs in the hitter-friendly setting of the Pacific Coast League. His .279/.377/.437 line translated to a 97 wRC+, indicating he was 3% worse than average.
He received limited big league looks in that time. Now out of options, he had been on the big league roster for all of 2026 until this move. In total, he has stepped to the plate 254 times in his big league career with a 6.3% walk rate, 26% strikeout rate, .180/.241/.302 line and 49 wRC+. That lack of offense has exhausted the patience of the Diamondbacks, which has pushed him into DFA limbo.
Since the trade deadline has passed, the Snakes will have to place Barrosa on waivers. His lack of production from the batter’s box will surely tamp down interest, though he is still young and has good numbers with the glove. In 623 2/3 innings in the outfield, mostly in center, he has been credited with six Defensive Runs Saved and 11 Outs Above Average. Perhaps that would be enough for a club to place a claim, hoping that the bat comes around in time.
If he goes unclaimed, he would stick with the Diamondbacks as non-roster depth. He doesn’t have a previous career outright and is shy of three years of big league service time, so he wouldn’t have the right to elect free agency.
