ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Unionized workers at Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester have agreed to extend their current labor contract.
The nearly 50-person bargaining committee agreed to the extension to continue negotiating terms and conditions of their employment. Two unions representing about 2,000 workers have been negotiating for their next contract since early August.
Contract talks are ongoing between 1199SEIU, SEIU Local 200United and the University of Rochester. Workers and university management are currently negotiating two days per week, but the unions are demanding more days with longer hours.
1199SEIU, which represents bedside hospital patient caregivers and service workers at Strong Memorial Hospital, and SEIU Local 200United, which represents service works at URochester, have been working together to negotiate one agreement that will maintain quality health insurance and improve wages to help retain and recruit more staff.
Retirement benefits and paid time off will also be key in contract talks for any new labor deal.
According to the union, workers are experiencing consequences over the lack of competitive wages as the affordability crisis and staffing challenges across the University of Rochester system grow. This comes as University of Rochester graduate workers continue to fight for union recognition and rights.
Last Saturday, hospital and campus workers from both unions gathered to get an update on contract talks.

The contract covering more than 2,000 workers was set to expire Saturday, but both sides agreed to four dates to continue negotiations through Sept. 26.
