ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Over a dozen members of the Monroe County Legislature have signed a memorandum opposing the change of Lake Ontario to Lake America.

President Donald Trump changed the lake’s name through an executive order, which calls on the Department of the Interior to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service. The change came after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada failed to reach a resolution.

The legislators’ letter called for Congress to pass the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act, which would prohibit the federal government from remaining any of the Great Lakes and nullify the president’s executive order. The letter also says that Monroe County will continue to recognize the name as Lake Ontario on all documents.

“For generations, residents of Monroe County and communities throughout the Great Lakes region have understood Lake Ontario not simply as a geographic feature, but as a shared resource connecting people, communities, and nations,” the letter reads. “…Lake Ontario was here before our borders, before our governments, and before our nations. Its history cannot be rewritten by executive order.”
