Frozen berries sold at Walmart stores in more than a dozen states, including Illinois and several other Midwest states, are being recalled for potential E. coli contamination linked to an outbreak that has already impacted several people.
The recall, which was first issued in July for certain frozen blueberries sold at Publix stores in several states, has now expanded to include Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend. The alert warns anyone with the product “should not consume it” and should throw it away or return it to Walmart for a full refund.
“If you froze a product without the original packaging and can’t tell if it’s part of the recall, throw it away,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned.
The frozen berries were shipped to Walmart stores in 16 states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.
The group behind the product, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., San Carlos, Chile, said no illnesses have been associated with the latest recalled item so far and the recall was issued “as a precautionary measure following traceback information of the previous recall.”
However, illnesses have been associated in multiple states with the original recall. At least 17 people have been infected with the E. coli O145:H28 strain in two states between May 11 and Aug. 2. Six of those have required hospitalization.
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli — or STEC — can cause stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea or vomitting. Infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication that involves acute kidney failure and other severe problems, particularly in young children and older adults.
