The second film in James Gunn's DCU was released in cinemas this year, with Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, following up after the success of Superman.
The film, which also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, with David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa, failed to ignite the box office, but now it will be available for a whole host of additional viewers, as it arrives on HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.
The film will be available to watch on the streamer from Thursday 10 September 2026.
The synopsis for Supergirl says it "reveals the origin of the interplanetary nomad Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, cousin of Kal-El, better known as Superman".
The synopsis continues: "Headstrong, worldly-wise, and often reckless, Supergirl exudes a brand of heroism all her own—truthful, relatable, and always on her own terms. But when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion.
"Together they undertake an epic, interstellar journey, struggling to balance one’s need for vengeance with the pursuit of justice—and to save the life of Kara’s best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately Supergirl will prove that doing good can be tough… and it doesn’t always have to be nice."
Supergirl already got a digital release, becoming available to purchase on a variety of platforms from 26 June.
Radio Times' review of Supergirl awarded the film 2 stars, with critic Jeremy Aspinall calling it "an underpowered and underwhelming superhero flick" but praising Alcock's performance.
He added: "Alcock does a decent job playing a Supergirl a million miles away from Helen Slater’s 1984 iteration or Melissa Benoist in the long-running TV show. All grunge aesthetic and attitude, she rises above the underwhelming script and direction."
Supergirl will be available to watch on HBO Max in the UK from 10 September 2026. Subscribe to HBO Max from £5.99 a month.
