Dad Stunned as the Pokémon Cards He Collected Alongside His Young Son Just Sold For $2 Million

A dad who’s been storing an old Pokémon card collection in his attic for the last 15 years just cashed in on his old hobby, and was stunned it raked in a whopping $2 million.

James Spooner, the head of trading cards at Ewbank’s Auctions in England, said in a news release that the man, who’s asked to remain anonymous, blew the British auction house away with his collection.

“When we saw what he had — all in mint condition — we couldn’t believe it, or the fact that he had no idea what they were worth,” Spooner marveled.

The man, who’s a retired decorator, decided to pull his Pokémon cards out of the attic after seeing a local newspaper story about a local teacher, Andrew Braund, who auctioned off three old cards for nearly 33,000 Pounds (the equivalent of $44,000 in the U.S.). According to the BBC, that payday was part of an April auction that allowed the man to pay for his summer wedding.

Seeing that news story, the new millionaire recalled that he had several retired cards in his own collection that were similar to Braund’s. So he took a few samples to Ewbank’s.

““When we then discovered that he had 42 such sets, our jaws hit the floor,” Spooner said. “We got to sell 41 of them, and he kept one.”

Even Ewbank’s, which has been hosting dedicated auctions for trading cards since 2021, didn’t expect the 41 sets to bring in so much money. Spooner explained, “This is easily the most valuable collection we have handled so far – we thought it might go as high as £270,000. Then the pre-sale bids started coming in and we realized we were on to something much bigger.”

The anonymous dad who’s become an overnight millionaire said in a statement, “When my son was young, in the late 1990s, he started getting cards and swapping them at school. I thought they looked nice and wondered whether they might be a good investment.”

“I was lucky enough to find someone in Malaysia who sold complete sets,” he continued, “and I bought a couple of things from them on eBay. They then asked me if I would be interested in buying a complete master set of Pokémon cards as they had about two or three master sets for each issue.”

“I thought that it would be cheaper to buy the full set rather than keep buying sealed packs of random cards in hope that when you opened them you could complete a set,” the man recalled, noting that the first set he bought cost about $400 U.S., but just made over $100,000 at auction on its own.

The collector said his son got to have his own cards he could play with and trade, while he kept his own collection pristine, in a bespoke Pokémon binders that he put up in the attic after his son lost interest in Pokémon.

“He had his own cards, but he never got to touch these, I’m glad to say,” the dad said. “I know people always talk about finding treasure in the attic, but in my case that is literally true. I had no idea what I had.”
