The Duleep Trophy marked the beginning of the Indian domestic season. It started on 23rd August and is set to end on September 10, as the first competition of the domestic season have already had its two finalists, with East Zone taking on the South Zone. Ahead of the final, there have been clouds over the participation of three players, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma.
The final, which is scheduled to begin on 6th September, is set to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with fans getting free entry, as confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). The fans will be allowed to enter the stadium through Gate 4 and occupy the C, D and E lower stands at Chepauk.
Ahead of the final, there have been doubts over the participation of three crucial cricketers for their respective zones: Ishan Kishan, who is the captain for the East Zone, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the vice-captain of the same zone and the skipper of South Zone, and Tilak Varma. They are all included in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan.
The three are crucial members of the Zonal sides as well, as Kishan led the East Zone side to the final after 14 years and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi showcased his red-ball skill in the semi-final, while Tilak also scored a hundred in the semi-final and helped his side to win over the North Zone. They will be big misses if they do not feature in the final.
Why cannot Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play in the final?
As per reports from PTI, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma’s participation will depend on the green signal of India National Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir. According to the source, who informed PTI that the Men in Blue will relocate to Delhi ahead of the T20I series on September 9th or 10th. The final call will be taken by Gambhir.
"The Indian team will assemble in Delhi on either September 9 or 10. If the head coach wants all three to report as per the T20I team’s itinerary, then the trio cannot play," a source said while speaking to PTI.
"But if the head coach wants them to play the final and report to Delhi on September 10 late evening, they can also do that," the source added.
South Zone gets major boost ahead of Duleep Trophy final
For East Zone, it will be a big loss as Ishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have been their key players in the competition so far. The latter scored a brilliant 92 runs in the semi-final. Kishan also led the side well from the quarter-final.
Tilak’s absence will not create much of a problem for the South Zone side, as per PTI’s reports, Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj have been asked to feature in the final of the competition, as the trio does not have any red-ball matches this month. The South Zone side will have a big boost given their stature and form.
