The Gentlemen season 2 ending explained: Who killed [spoiler]?

*Warning - contains full spoilers for The Gentlemen season 2.*

Well... we need to decompress after that.

If, like us, you've already made it through all eight episodes of The Gentlemen season 2, then you will know that it all ends on a major cliffhanger, and a moment which feels sure to change everything for Eddie Horniman (Theo James) and his family going forward.

It was quite the season, with all the thrills, action, violence and aristocratic manoeuvring you'd expect. But just how does season 2 end and what do those final moments mean for the show going forward?

Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of The Gentlemen season 2.

The Gentlemen season 2 ending explained: Who killed Bella?

In The Gentlemen season 2 episode 6, tragedy struck. As they were on their honeymoon, Eddie Horniman and his new wife Bella took a seaplane out for a planned flight, but only Bella was on the aircraft as Eddie travelled by car on the road next to her.

Then, suddenly, a bomb detonated on her plane, killing her instantly and leaving Eddie bereft - and desperate for vengeance.

In the subsequent episode, armed goons stormed the Horniman family home intending to finish the job and kill Eddie. They also attempted to take Charly and Nanny's baby.

Thankfully, Charly, Nanny and Sabrina managed to escape and protect the newborn, as Geoffrey took out the assailants.

He captured one, and once Eddie returned, they interrogated him. At one point, he appeared to confirm Eddie's suspicions that Bobby Glass had been behind the attempted hit. However, Susie later assured him this wasn't the case, and in fact Bobby has recently purchased Eddie's debt from Stanley Johnston, showing his faith in Eddie's future.

After Sabrina received a shifty phone call from Freddy, who had been in recovery from his substance addition, Eddie realised the horrible truth - Freddy had been behind the hit.

As we had known all season, but Eddie and the rest of the family hadn't, Freddy had been under the spiritual guidance of Gospel John, who had further poisoned him against his brother. They had then schemed, along with the rest of the Scouse crime family, to murder Eddie and take his property, land, wealth and title for themselves.

They had tried to take Charly's baby to ensure the estate didn't go to him, and also intended to give the newborn to two members of their community who had recently lost a child.

What did Eddie do to Freddy?

After finding out the truth, Eddie and Susie set a trap for Gospel John and his men, killing all of the goons before kidnapping him - Eddie assured Susie he had different plans for John.

He then finally confronted Freddy and almost killed him, as Freddy finally revealed how much he hated Eddie for usurping him in the line of succession to the Horniman estate.

As Freddy looked death in the face, he pleaded for his life, but Eddie assured him someone had to die for what had happened to Bella.

He then bundled Freddy into the back of a van, where a man waited with a chainsaw, and John was tied up and gagged. He shut the door, as we heard the chainsaw roar to life and screams come from the van.

Eventually, Freddy emerged from the van covered in blood and utterly horrified. He then lifted Gospel John's head, which he had, on Eddie's unspoken orders, sawed from his body. As he let out a scream in horror, Eddie assured him he had been a "good boy".

What will happen in season 3?

Your guess is as good as ours, but it seems likely that Eddie will continue down his dark path. All season, Bobby Glass has been asserting that Eddie is changing and transforming into his final form, while Stanley Johnston has been urging him to fulfil his destiny.

While he was previously driven primarily by ambition, he is now fuelled at least in part by vengeance, and will no doubt continue to keep Freddy close to him, to both monitor and punish him for his part in Bella's death.

But what of Freddy? Will he fall into line, traumatised and broken from what Eddie made him do, or will he be continually looking for opportunities to take his own vengeance and topple Eddie's reign?

Of course, we've also got the matter of Eddie's relationship with Susie. All season, it has been clear that they have feelings for one another, even if they both assert that their connection is purely one of business. Now that Eddie is widowed, and Susie is single, could they finally get together? And what would that mean for Eddie's fractious partnership with Bobby?

Whatever the case, fans can be thankful that we already know we will get answers to these questions - The Gentlemen was renewed for season 3 ahead of season 2 being released.
