Jared Hudson, Ammie Akin deliver speeches to UA’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter

Fifteen students connected by The University of Alabama’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter gathered in Lloyd Hall to hear Jared Hudson and Ammie Akin speak Tuesday night.

Under new leadership, this is the first YAF meeting of the school year.

“I think that the first meeting went very well,” YAF president Caleb Elmore said. “I think that we have a lot of interest, proven by the people that showed up.”

Before the speech, students chatted about sports and campus policies they disagreed with; Hudson and Akin showed up 20 minutes late.

Fresh off a loss in the Republican Senate primary, Hudson gave his speech on his military and political experience with an overarching theme of Christianity and faith.

Hudson lost the republican primary election in Alabama in June after President Trump endorsed Barry Moore. Hudson previously lost his bid for Jefferson County Sheriff in 2022.

“Jesus is the righteousness of God, and if you’re sitting in this room and you want to hold to that F in YAF, that freedom portion, understand that freedom only exists in the person of Jesus Christ,” Hudson said.

Hudson pointed out that Jesus Christ was not only the most important part of freedom, but also the most important part of him. Second to his faith, his “blonde-headed wife and three beautiful little girls” are most important.

Continuing his speech, Hudson connected the bloodshed of Jesus Christ for his believers’ freedom to that of American troops for Americans’ freedom.

“You have to understand this: your First Amendment right, your ability to worship, your ability to say what you want to say, your Second Amendment right is what protects that,” Hudson said. “Understand you sleep in peace at night because men go out and do violence on your behalf.”

Following Hudson’s faith-charged speech, Akin delivered a short but sweet speech on discovering your “why.”

Currently running for Congress in Alabama’s 7th district, Akin described her why as the three different key aspects of her life: her faith, her husband and her three sons. Akin also said that the audience’s why is what drives them to the polls.

After 25 years working in education, Akin ventured into politics after special primaries were held for some Alabama districts after redistricting earlier this year.

“There’s a why somewhere in your life, and I would also tell you that there’s a why right here around you,” Akin said. “So I would encourage you to step outside and into the rest of the district. Find your why.”
