McLaren heads to Monza this week with momentum on its side and a fresh weapon on its MCL40, as the reigning Constructors’ champions prepare to chase a third consecutive Formula 1 victory at the Italian Grand Prix.
The Woking outfit has confirmed that its much-discussed rotating rear wing – which it is calling the H-Wing – will make its race weekend debut at the high-speed Italian circuit, adding another intriguing element to a package that has propelled McLaren to back-to-back wins.
The timing is hardly accidental. Monza’s long straights and relentless emphasis on efficiency provide the perfect environment for McLaren to unleash its own interpretation of the rotating rear-wing concept first seen on Ferrari’s car during pre-season running.
McLaren finally unleashes its H-Wing
The device effectively changes its configuration between cornering and straight-line running, with the aim of trimming drag when maximum speed is required. McLaren had already experimented with prototypes earlier in the season, but an issue prevented its first planned track outing in Austria.
A revised version subsequently appeared during FP1 at the Hungaroring, where McLaren evaluated the concept ahead of its intended introduction at a low-downforce venue.
Now the waiting is over, with the H-Wing set to feature on both MCL40s at Monza.
The name itself is a typically McLaren-flavoured piece of branding: it references the H in the Etihad logo on the rear wing, positioned along the centreline where the mechanism that changes the wing’s configuration is located.
It also echoes the team’s famous F-duct from 2010, which took its name from the Vodafone branding surrounding its installation point.
“We arrive at Monza following back-to-back victories, and it has been great for everyone in the team to see the progress we have made this season rewarded on track,” said McLaren technical director Neil Houldey.
“Winning again was a fantastic feeling and has reinforced the motivation across the team to keep pushing. We know we have had a quick car at the last few races, but we are not taking anything for granted.”
A new weapon for the Temple of Speed
McLaren is therefore refusing to rest on its recent success, instead bringing a broader low-drag package to the fastest circuit on the calendar.
“This weekend, we have brought what we believe is needed to be competitive, including a new low-drag rear wing specification, including the first use of our H-Wing, alongside some small aerodynamic and low-drag options that we will evaluate before deciding the final specification for qualifying,” said Houldey.
While consecutive wins in Budapest and Zandvoort have established McLaren as the form team heading into Monza, Houldey insists there is no room for complacency.
"Overall, we know there is still more performance to unlock from the MCL40, both through maximising the package we already have and through further upgrades planned for the races ahead,” the Briton concluded.
