Rochester’s Bhutanese Community raises funds for Nepal flood victims as death toll surpasses 1,000

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than a thousand people have been killed by flash floods in Nepal, and nearly 4,000 are still missing.

The State Department says 75 Americans are still missing and 14 have made their way to safety in Nepal. But one local organization is hoping to make a difference for the survivors.

It’s called the Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester, but it also includes members from Buffalo and Syracuse. The group has many Nepali members, many of whom are understandably devastated by the floods.

Now, they’re raising funds right here in Western & Central New York to send to their families still surviving in Nepal.

Pratiksha Aryal is originally from Nepal but now lives in Buffalo. She recently learned that 14 people from her mother’s side of the family perished in the floods.

“My Nepalian family, they were missing, and then we out today, they are all dead,” Aryal said.

“[I’m] feeling very bad. I miss my family,” she said.

Aryal’s brother-in-law, Bishnu Adhikari, has been helping to gather whatever they can to send it to those in need. “Whatever penny we have, we collect penny to penny to dollar, and then dollar to $100. So that way we are sending it through the Prime Minister’s account [for] Nepal,” Adhikari said.

But it’s not just Buffalo. All of Western and Central New York’s Nepali communities are coming together through the Bhutanese Community of Greater Rochester to help send funding for food, clothes and medical aid to Nepal.

Bijaya Khadka is the president of the BCGR. He says they plan to send money first to member families who were affected, then to the larger Nepali population.

“We have our members here in Rochester whose family members and relatives in Nepal have been directly affected by this,” Khadka said.

“And our first area of focus is to be able to provide them services of the families who has ties, to the members of our community here in Rochester. And then move, you know, to the vulnerable communities,” he said.

Khadka says they’re aiming to raise $30,000.
