Long gone are the days when a team could call up any number of players from their 40-man roster when the calendar flips to September. But there is still a slight roster expansion for each team to enjoy. On September 1, each big league team can add one pitcher and one hitter to their active roster. And for the Cubs, their pitcher is a familiar face: Tyler Ferguson.
Ferguson, 32, has been up and down a bit with the Cubs this season, tossing a total of 17.0 IP for Chicago. And although the overall numbers look pretty ugly (5.29 ERA, 5.44 FIP), 50% of his earned runs allowed came in his first two outings back in early May and then early June.
Indeed, over his last 14.1 IP, Ferguson has earned a 3.14 ERA with a 29.1% strikeout rate and a 3.6% walk rate. I don’t think there’s a good reason to believe he’s quite that good, but he has had some big-league success in the past and his numbers are what they are.
Now, with all that said, Ferguson would have to pitch out of his mind to stay on the roster, let alone become a playoff reliever, by the end of this month (especially with Edward Cabrera and potentially Justin Steele soon joining the party … to say nothing of Javier Assad or maybe even Ben Brown, if there’s some sort of miracle), but it’s not like the Cubs are overflowing with relief talent. Relief options? Sure. Talent? A little more questionable.
Anyway, it’s nice to have another option in-house. Here’s hoping for the best.
On the positional side, the Cubs have selected utility prospect BJ Murray, which Brett covered in greater detail yesterday.
Murray, 26, has split his time at Iowa this season between third base, first base, and left field, hitting .294/.395/.500/128 wRC+ with a 13.4% BB rate, a 21.3% K rate, and 16 homers over 516 plate appearances. It’s been a very good year at the plate for him after a tough 2024 season that saw him struggle in his first go at Triple-A. He was back to Double-A in 2025, where he hit again, and then this year he turned it on at Triple-A.The defensive versatility will help his big league bench profile, as will his ability to switch-hit. I’m not sure there’s a future big league starter there, but it’s not hard to see the potential value at the edge of a 40-man roster. If the Cubs do call him up this week, he’d be on the 40-man ahead of the offseason (at which point the Cubs would have to decide whether to keep him on the whole way).
The Cubs not only called up Murray, but they threw him right into the starting lineup, at DH, tonight against Robert Gasser and the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.
