LYONS, N.Y. — A Wayne County grand jury indicted a man on a hate crime charge in addition to an assault charge connected to an attack that happened in June.

Brandon Watt’s arraignment took place at Wayne County Court Tuesday. The prosecutor asked for Watt’s bail to be set at $20,000 cash. The judge set it at $25,000.
Watt also had to sign a stay away order of protection, ensuring he doesn’t have any contact with Johnny White, the man he is accused of assaulting. White’s family showed up in solidarity with him, including his sisters, mom, nieces and daughters.
White’s family said Watt had been harassing and threatening White for weeks before the assault.
“It’s tough. I don’t like talking about it. People that know me — I don’t like talking about it because I don’t want to think about it. Because it makes me angry,” White said.
The injuries from the assault left White with a broken nose, broken eye socket and ear stitches. White’s family said he’s had a hard time sleeping knowing Watt was out of custody.
Watt walked out of the courtroom in handcuffs. He pleaded not guilty to both the hate crime and assault charges. White’s sister said they’re just glad he’ll be in custody.
Watt’s next court date is set for Sept. 22, which will be a pretrial conference between Watt, his attorney and the judge.
