IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Day three of testimony is underway on Monday in the trial of two brothers accused of killing a family of four in Irondequoit.
The trial for brothers Luis Soriano and Julio Soriano began last Thursday with opening statements and continued on Friday with expert witnesses taking the stand. The brothers are accused of killing the family in August 2024 in the basement of their home on Knapp Avenue, then setting the home on fire.
Prosecutors say the brothers killed two children — Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, 4, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno, 2 — along with the children’s father, Fraime Ubaldo, 30, and mother, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26. In court on Thursday, prosecutors argued that the brothers killed the family in retribution over a missing package of drugs delivered to the Knapp Avenue home.
The prosecution team said Luis Soriano believed that Ubaldo, his cousin, stole the package of drugs. The defense argued for a mistrial over terms that the prosecution used, including the word “slaughtered,” but the judge denied the request.
The two brothers will have one trial with two separate juries. They face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson, kidnapping, and burglary. Investigators arrested Julio Soriano a week after the killings. His brother was arrested in June of 2025 after a months-long search for him. U.S. Marshals say Luis Soriano fled to Puerto Rico after the killings, then traveled to the Dominican Republic, where he was arrested.
