At one point, the most infuriating thing about Furious was that it was going to end. But thankfully, Hulu decided to renew Liz Meriwether's new summer hit just a few days ahead of the finale, ensuring that episode 8 won't be the last we see of Emmy Rossum as Alice Black.
Well, assuming she survives the end of season 1.
Throughout the show, Black has been on the hunt for a female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew. The pair grew close when Alice posed as a civilian in a women's shelter to trick Catherine, but she slipped through her fingers at the last minute.
Towards the end of episode 7, Black and her supervisor, Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), caught up to Catherine, only for Alice to let her go. This wasn't exactly selfless on her part, though.
After Black fumbled an opportunity to catch the child abuser Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie) a few episodes prior, Alice has essentially set Catherine loose on him, sending her to his house so the FBI can get a search warrant and secure the evidence they need to arrest him.
With that, everyone is furiously heading to the Easton house, including us, as we hurtle towards a finale that will end up being the most-talked about show this summer.
Furious season 1 ending explained
Does Catherine get revenge against Emma?
The final episode begins with Catherine arriving just as Emma Easton (Hope Davis) finishes clearing away the evidence of what her father did to all those poor girls. Except, Catherine arrives before she's finished.
Nora's supervisor, Ed George (Danny McCarthy), calls Emma to warn her because he too has been complicit, helping to cover up Jay's evil wrongdoings. That's when Catherine confronts Emma in the greenhouse, recalling her involvement in the abuse she and her best friend Isabel endured at the hands of Jay.
"I'm a victim here too," claims Emma, trying to garner sympathy for the cruelty she too inflicted. Catherine shoves her face in the soil, demanding more answers. Emma offers up her gun, suggesting that Catherine should go and kill her father instead. There's no love lost between them, not by any means.
"Is this where you hid out when he was hurting little girls?" asks Catherine.
"They weren’t little girls. You were a teenager. There’s a big difference."
That's when Catherine rushes Emma, who shoots her in the shoulder. Injured, Catherine runs off to the house, but not before she takes Emma's gun.
Alice hears the gunshot and gives chase, following Catherine into the Easton house.
Being back where she was abused, Catherine starts to remember fragments of what happened. Alice is more concerned with getting her to drop the gun though, knowing that the police and FBI will kill her if they burst in and find Catherine armed.
Together they talk about murder, how people don't get to decide who lives or dies.
"I didn’t get to decide a single f**king thing about my life," screams Catherine, remembering how she was "starved and f**ked and hit and strangled."
That's when she points out that Alice is being a hypocrite because there was a moment earlier this season when Catherine could see how badly she wanted her abusive ex-boyfriend to die.
"It’s power watching someone die," explains Catherine. "There’s a moment right before they go when you’re not scared at all. And I was always scared… It’s like I’m eating him, like I'm swallowing him, like everything he’s ever done is disappearing inside me… I have all the power. I want you to feel it."
As Nora and Danny (Scoot McNairy) arrive outside, followed closely by Ed's FBI unit, Emma, Catherine and Alice all wind up in the room where the abuse took place.
Aiming her gun at Emma, Catherine starts to remember that Isabel wouldn't stop bleeding after the abuse.
"I told you she'd just had a baby," says Catherine.
Emma claims her father wouldn't let her get a doctor to come help.
She went to get Catherine to reassure Isabel, who said she couldn’t feel her hands. Isabel squeezed Catherine’s hands tightly, clearly in great pain.
That's when Emma points out Isabel was alive when she left the room but was dead upon her return.
Catherine drops the gun, suddenly remembering the truth. Alice holds her hand, saying "You didn’t want her to be in any more pain… It was you."
"She asked me to," replies Catherine who now sees a vision of Isabel where Alice is sitting. The actual Alice strokes her face, reassuring Catherine as we realise she killed her friend to save her. And that's when the FBI burst in.
How did Jay die?
As arrests are made, Alice goes to where Jay is still sleeping. Upon being woken up, his eyes light up as he remembers seeing Alice somewhere before…
"You’re the movie star!" he exclaims. "I like your video. Always one of my favourites."
Jay is referring to the illegal video of Alice that was filmed when she was just 14 years old – the one that Jay kept on his computer, a copy of which now belongs to Danny as evidence on a hard drive.
The despicable old man starts choking as his breathing machine begins to beep erratically.
Alice shouts for medical assistance, and then we jump outside where we find out he died. Nora laments the lack of evidence that showed up in their search of the house as Ed smiles, knowing he's in the clear.
Wrapping things up
Alice's abusive ex Marshall Connelly (Jake Lacy) receives a medal following the altercation where Catherine shot him a few episodes earlier. Nora shows up to speak to Danny at the ceremony, saying "I love seeing cops jerk each other off with jewelry," before asking him to hand over the evidence she knows he's been hiding.
Danny refuses, claiming he doesn't know what she's talking about. We, however, know he's lying, and that's because he doesn't want anyone to see the video of Alice from when she was younger.
We find out Alice has also been avoiding Nora's calls, but one person she isn't avoiding is Catherine, who she goes to visit in prison.
Catherine shares the news that she and Alden (Steve Way) have got married while she's in jail, joking that they haven't decided where to honeymoon just yet. Alice also has news, revealing that the authorities found Isabel's body. It's being moved off Hart Island to a cemetery where she will be laid to rest with a marked grave.
That's not all though. Catherine knows Alice is keeping a secret, one that Alice refuses to fess up.
Away from the chaos of prison, Alice and Danny finally get that beach getaway they've always talked about. It's there that they kiss and presumably go all the way at last.
Danny tells Alice that he can't be rough with her, not in the way she grew to like while working through her trauma. Alice takes a shower after, feeling safe in the knowledge that Danny is sitting right outside. The shower was where Marshall would abuse her, so seeing Alice finally relax and enjoy that space means she's come a really long way.
Danny gives Alice the flash drive later, saying she can do what she wants with it while he considers retiring by the beach.
While watching the diggers move Isabel's body to its rightful resting place, Alice hands the flash drive over to Nora.
"This is what Danny had. Hal was compiling evidence against Jay. I’m on there too," adds Alice. "I was 14 and thought I was in love. There’s a video and Jay had it. I didn’t disclose it."
Nora suggests that Alice should watch the video.
"You wanna do this job? You face it."
Back at work, Nora slides a piece of paper over to Alice which contains the code to the room where disturbing video evidence can be watched during an investigation. "Search 'Alice.'"
Alice does as Nora suggests in a heartbreaking moment. With the camera focused tightly on her face, we watch Alice experience the pain of making that video all over again, and we also watch Rossum winning her Emmy for this show in real time, too.
In one last exchange, Nora corners Ed in the elevator and mentions "a nice gift" Danny gave her, a flash drive she asked to keep safe.
"Jay was my source," replies Hal, knowing that the evidence on that flash drive would destroy his entire life. "If we didn’t take info from criminals, how would we do this job?"
To that, Nora asks, "Why didn’t we f**k?" suggesting it would be "fun" and "a little weird."
"Maybe I will f**k you one of these days," adds Nora with a smile. And with that, Hal knows she will hold this evidence over him for as long as she damn pleases, making him squirm endlessly.
How did Jay really die?
The finale cuts back to Catherine accusing Alice of keeping a secret still, one related to what really happened in Jay's bedroom when she got arrested.
Alice sticks to her story, claiming that Jay died of "respiratory failure." And he did, but that's not the whole story.
"Did you like the way it felt?" asks Catherine.
We flash back again to Jay's death, but this time, we can see Alice deliberately stepping on his ventilator wire before she physically choked him to death, all while calling out for help.
Yep, Alice now knows exactly what Catherine meant earlier in the episode when she talked of the power that killing someone can bring, especially when you yourself have felt powerless for so very long.
Back in the computer room, Alice checks the database to find out who watched the video of her that was filmed when she was just 14. It turns out over 50,000 people have downloaded the file. 50,000 people who deserve to be punished.
But Alice isn't horrified. Her eyes light up, and she even smiles as she realises that this is now a list of potential victims. Just as Catherine sought revenge against Jay and the people who wronged her, so can Alice now as well. And that's where we're heading in season 2, with Alice in almost the exact same place Catherine was at the start of this season.
