The floor has fallen from beneath Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) feet in Coronation Street after learning about his family's history of breast cancer.
Last week, his maternal great aunt Celeste Butterfield (Frances Barber) lost her battle against the disease. In the hours prior to her death, she told Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) that a number of their relatives had all died from cancer, leaving her wondering whether they carried a familial BRCA (Breast Cancer) gene mutation.
This mutation means inheriting a harmful change in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes from a parent, which significantly raises your lifetime risk of developing certain cancers.
In today's episode, Bernie Winter-Alahan (Jane Hazlegrove) confided in husband Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) that she would be seeking tests to ensure that she did not carry the gene.
The news of Celeste's death was spreading through Weatherfield, with her friend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) rattled to discover that she'd passed after a heated argument with her. He was mortified that their final conversation was on such bad terms.
Meanwhile, Gemma cornered Kit in the caff and got him up to speed on what had happened.
He was stunned, and quickly made his excuses to leave. Kit then approached Bernie, and quizzed her about the family history and wondered whether she was aware of it.
She assured her children that she was going to have the tests and hope that the results provided some clarity. That way they wouldn't have anything to worry about.
Gemma then spoke about how she'd researched breast cancer, and was shocked to learn that men could be affected too.
Later that day, in the yard of the Rovers, a tearful Bernie broke down in Dev's arms, telling him that she would never forgive herself if she'd passed on the cancer gene to her kids.
However, little does she realise, Kit is already keeping his stage three breast cancer diagnosis secret.
A recent press release from Coronation Street confirmed that they'd be tackling a male breast cancer storyline.
The production team have been working closely with cancer charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now to accurately portray Kit's diagnosis, while also raising awareness of the real risks of the illness among men.
On learning of the storyline, actor Jacob Roberts said: "I genuinely didn’t know that men could get breast cancer and I felt, to make it authentic, that Kit shouldn't know that men can get breast cancer either.
"Speaking to the charities and male survivors has been really insightful, lots of men don't know they can get this and, for Kit, it's that utter disbelief of how can this be? Not only for his age, but how can I have this as a bloke and who else in the family could be affected."
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 or can be streamed from 7am on ITVX.
