On Thursday, the SGA Senate discussed Lobby Board, voted on a resolution to honor Dolly Parton and passed a bill to add new positions to the executive cabinet.
First on the docket was an announcement by Lily Leitner, vice president for external affairs, and Theo Villanueva, external affairs chief of staff. They introduced Lobby Board.
“Lobby Board serves as our official student advocacy group,” Leitner said. “They work surrounding a bunch of different initiatives and different topics on campus but are like a bridge between the government and UA’s administration and the rest of SGA.”
The four key areas that Lobby Board focuses on are advocacy, civic engagement, empowerment, connection and voter education. Leitner and Villanueva encouraged the senators to connect with Lobby Board so that students will have more advocacy opportunities.
Higher Education Day, an annual event in Montgomery, allows Lobby Board members and student advocates to work with students from the other 14 public universities in the state of Alabama.
“When we come together, we’re able to accomplish so much more because we get to learn about things that are affecting students from all over the state,” Leitner said.
Next, the Senate passed a resolution to honor Dolly Parton’s life and work.
“She was an incredible figure, a singular form of excellence in music, literacy, and honestly, well-being,” said Ashton Lamberth, Barefield College of Arts and Sciences senator. “From her incredible initiatives such as the Imagination Library, which has impacted children all over the state of Alabama, to even setting up a fund to help those in need of disaster relief, I think her impact has been indelible, not only in the state of Alabama but across our entire nation.”
SGA President Samantha Simmons added two new positions to the executive cabinet: the director of policy and the director of special events. The SGA Senate passed a bill that officially added the two positions and their duties to the code of laws.
The bill to modernize the code of laws governing the Lobby Board was sent to the External Affairs Committee for further review.
