Sometimes the unexpected outcome you didn’t want can still produce a positive result.
Melissa Joan Hart discovered that firsthand when she was just 10 years old. Before she became one of television’s most recognizable child stars, Hart landed a small role in the 1986 comedy Crocodile Dundee, but moviegoers never got to see her performance.
Hart recently looked back on the unusual credit during an interview with Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea, revealing that she still receives residual payments from the movie despite being cut from the finished film.
“I was in Crocodile Dundee, and even though you will not see my face in it – I was cut out – I still get my 26 cents every few months or something,” she told PEOPLE.
Her brief role was filmed for a scene in which a young girl skins her knee in Central Park and is helped by Paul Hogan’s title character. Although the scene ultimately didn’t survive the editing process, the experience gave Hart an early introduction to one of the less glamorous realities of being an actor.
“You find that you have a lot of rejection and you learn young that you have to let it go, and if you don’t have thick skin, you aren’t going to make it,” Hart said in a 2011 interview with SheKnows.
Hart in “Clarissa Explains It All” (1991)That lesson would come in handy as Hart continued building her career. She eventually landed the starring role of Clarissa Darling on Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All, followed by the title role in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Both shows became defining parts of Hart’s career, with Clarissa Explains It All running from 1991 to 1994 and Sabrina the Teenage Witch airing from 1996 to 2003.
Decades later, the little role that disappeared from Crocodile Dundee has still managed to follow Hart around in the form of those tiny residual checks. And Hart has a sense of humor about it. She joked that there’s even a Los Angeles bar called Residuals where performers can put their residual money toward drinks.
Twenty-six cents at a time, not a bad return on a scene that never aired.
