Cooling ahead, Sunday Aug 30th forecast

Very warm conditions once again, but we did manage to shave off a few degrees and further cooling is on the way. Advisories for heat are expected to drop off for Sunday with just a slight chance that a few of the warmest inland areas exceed the threshold and another alert will be posted for Sunday. We are also monitoring more northerly Sundowner winds for the South Coast and other areas located on the south side of our east to west coastal ranges. Winds from the north could exceed 40 to 50 mph and a Wind Advisory is in place for the Gaviota region along the Santa Ynez mountains which will last until very early Sunday morning. Patchy fog is expected to start building for our coastal areas as cooler air begins to fill in from the ocean. Highs on Sunday will cool some more, but remain very warm in some areas as it takes a bit of time to get completely free from our recent heat wave. Look for inland temperatures to be in the 80's to very low 90's. Beaches will see more 70's with a few areas nearing the low 80's.

Looking ahead, Mother Nature will continue to cool things down through early next week with more fog and seasonal temperatures. We still will need to keep an eye on some tropical moisture drifting up from the south off the Pacific making for some very slight thunder chances over the mountains. Overall it looks like a very quiet and nice way to end August and ring in September, but some interesting things are brewing in our very warm ocean to our south. Tropical Storm Karina is expected to continue to strengthen and churn her way north along the coast of Baja. Surf will likely pick up from the south with not only Karina energy, but also another swell from the Southern Hemisphere by late in the work week. By next weekend or just past, our computer models get very tricky with what to expect from Karina. If low pressure to our north holds long enough next week, it could steer the storm in to California bringing possible heavy rain and thunder. However, if an area of high pressure to our east nudges back toward the West Coast just enough, that would keep it offshore and steer more to the north. We will need to monitor closely as any tropical system getting close to our shore is unusual. Updates will come and will pass the latest forecast on to you as we get them in to our weather center.
