A 27-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly tried to light a Molotov cocktail at a CTA bus stop earlier this summer.
According to authorities, Chicago resident Marshun Kimber has been charged with arson and other charges in connection with the July 28 incident, which unfolded in the Beverly neighborhood.
Officers were called to a bus stop in the 1900 block of East 95th Street on July 28 for reports of a man holding an object that was believed to be an incendiary device, a glass bottle with a rag coming out of the top.
The bottle was filled with an unspecified liquid, according to the caller.
When police arrived on scene they found the suspect holding the bottle with one hand, and a lighter in the other hand. Refusing multiple commands to put the bottle down, the suspect continued to try sparking the lighter, and ultimately a confrontation occurred as the officers tried to wrest the object from his hands.
The suspect then dropped the bottle, and multiple officers were sickened by the odor from the liquid inside, according to a police report. The suspect then began resisting arrest, striking an officer in the face with an open hand.
Once the suspect was handcuffed he allegedly began yelling incoherently at officers, and was transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.
He was released from custody on July 30, then failed to appear for a hearing in court on August 7, according to Chicago police. An arrest warrant was issued, and he was taken into custody on Thursday.
According to Chicago police, the suspect is being charged with possession of an explosive device, aggravated battery of a peace officer, and attempted arson.
He was ordered held in custody until his next court hearing on September 23.
