Lando Norris has effectively put his long-term Formula 1 future beyond doubt, committing himself to McLaren until at least 2030 in a major show of faith in the team that has taken him from promising junior to world champion.
The announcement came at an especially upbeat moment for the Woking outfit. Norris has just swept to consecutive victories in Hungary and the Netherlands, converting McLaren’s latest upgrades into back-to-back wins and strengthening his position at the head of the team’s charge.
Now, rather than merely riding the current wave of success, Norris has chosen to anchor his future to it.
McLaren confirmed on Saturday that the 26-year-old has signed a new long-term agreement that runs through at least 2030, with multi-year options potentially keeping him at the team even longer.
Norris personally broke the news to McLaren staff during the team’s annual family and friends open day, turning the contract announcement into a celebration at the heart of his racing home.
From McLaren junior to world champion
Norris joined McLaren’s junior programme in 2017 before making his F1 debut with the team two years later. He has never raced for another outfit, instead growing alongside McLaren as the team transformed from midfield struggler into a championship-winning force.
His previous contract was due to expire at the end of 2027. The new deal therefore represents a significant extension of a relationship that has already produced 13 victories, 18 poles and 48 podium finishes—and, most importantly, the 2025 drivers’ championship.
"McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030," Norris said.
"When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships.
"We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we’re capable of achieving it. I can’t wait to get back in the car in Monza and I’m very excited about what the future holds for us, both over the rest of this season, and in the coming years.”
That final sentiment is particularly significant. Having already delivered the championship McLaren had spent years chasing, Norris is not treating that achievement as the conclusion of the story. Instead, he has doubled down on the partnership in pursuit of more silverware.
His new commitment also preserves the team’s formidable driver pairing. Oscar Piastri remains under contract through 2028, meaning McLaren has secured both sides of its current line-up well into the future.
Stella and Brown hail McLaren’s ‘special’ champion
For team principal Andrea Stella, keeping Norris was about far more than simply retaining a fast driver.
"He is an exceptional driver, someone who combines outstanding natural speed with maturity, consistency and a strong commitment to McLaren, but above all, he is a special human being who is valued by everyone in the team," Stella said.
"Since joining McLaren as part of our junior programme, he has grown with us and played a central role in bringing the team back to the front of Formula 1.
This extension gives us important continuity and reinforces our confidence in the direction we are taking together. With him and Oscar, we know we can count not only on one of the strongest partnerships but also on one of the most united and close-knit teams in Formula 1."
That sense of continuity is central to McLaren’s ambitions. The team has now won consecutive constructors’ championships in 2024 and 2025, while Norris’ title last year ended a 17-year wait for its first drivers’ crown since Lewis Hamilton’s triumph in 2008.
Zak Brown, who has been closely involved in Norris’ progression from McLaren prospect to established superstar, sees the new agreement as the latest chapter in a development story that has mirrored the team’s own revival.

“His journey with the team is a fantastic example of our commitment to identifying, developing and supporting world-class talent, and his achievements speak for themselves,” said the McLaren Racing boss.
"Together with Andrea, Oscar and the wider team, Lando has helped drive McLaren into a new papaya era of success, helping us go from the back of the grid, to double consecutive constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025 and our first drivers’ championship in 17 years.

And there is little sign of Norris taking his foot off the accelerator. Alongside the new contract, McLaren gifted its world champion the very car that carried him to his maiden title – the MCL39.
With Norris now locked in until at least 2030, Piastri secured through 2028 and McLaren continuing to operate at the sharp end of the grid, the papaya team has done more than secure its star driver.
It has effectively declared that the Norris era is only just beginning.
