Controversial right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by immigration officials in the United States.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the 41-year-old former Breitbart News editor was arrested at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana on August 27.
His arrest came after he failed to appear at an earlier immigration hearing, DHS added.
What have US authorities said?
In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said Yiannopoulos “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws” having originally arrived in the US in 2019.
“Yiannopoulos was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on July 22, after failing to show up for his immigration hearing,” the spokesperson said.
“He will remain in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) custody pending removal.”
The spokesperson added Yiannopoulos’ stay in detention was a “choice”, noting the US government is offering money and free flights for people to “self deport”.
Despite having originally arrived in the country legally, the DHS referred to the 41-year-old as an “illegal alien”, echoing rhetoric President Donald Trump and his supporters, of which Yiannopoulos is one, have frequently used to attack migrants.
US authorities have not officially confirmed where Yiannopoulos is being held, but ICE’s inmate registry appears to show he is in Louisiana.
Yiannopoulos has not yet commented on his detention.

Prior to his arrest, Yiannopoulos had been an outspoken supporter of ICE’s aggressive push to crack down on illegal immigration under the Trump administration.
“We have got to deport millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters,” he wrote in a social media post last year.
The 41-year-old also called for ICE agents to receive “total legal immunity” while on duty in a separate post.

Regularly linked with the alt-right, a connection he disputes, Yiannopoulos has written several controversial articles, including “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy” and “Would You Rather Your Child Had Feminism or Cancer?”
The 41-year-old was forced to resign from Breitbart in 2017 after footage emerged of him appearing to condone paedophilia.
Yiannopoulos denied allegations tied to the clip, saying he had been speaking about his own childhood experiences.
