NEW YORK — State legislation has been signed, expanding gun safety storage requirements and preventing people who’re not allowed to have guns from buying ammunition.
The legislation was signed at the New York Against Gun Violence annual benefit dinner.
The first law signed at the dinner aims to stop people who’re prohibited from buying a gun to also be prohibited from buying ammunition, along with stronger background checks.
“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my number one priority, which is why as Governor, I set out to enact one of the nation’s most advanced gun safety agendas — funding gun violence prevention programs at record levels and passing landmark legislation to prevent firearm tragedies,” Governor Hochul said. “Today, I’m proud to make our nation-leading laws even stronger to keep guns and ammunition out of the wrong hands and make our children and communities safer.”
The second of the two laws is called “Francesco’s Law,” stemming from the fifth anniversary of the death of 17-year-old Francesco, who killed himself with an unsecured shotgun. It requires gun owners to securely store firearms in locked storage containers when not being used. Additionally, it ensures that gun owners will be more strongly penalized if minors and unlicensed people gain access to the weapons.
